Twelve South BassJump 2 USB Subwoofer now available, further bumps your Mac's thump (update)

At a glance, one could confuse Twelve South's BassJump 2 for a 2011 Mac Mini -- don't be fooled though, this USB subwoofer aims for sound that's anything but. Much like the original BassJump, this guy's aimed at aiding MacBook speakers by adding extra low end boost, and employing proprietary software to keep it in all in check. Improving on the original, however, the BassJump 2 pumps out eight extra decibels of volume and comes with "remastered software," notably featuring iMac and Thunderbolt Display support. If it piques your fancy, the BassJump 2 is now available for about $70 -- much like a pair of utilitarian Grado headphones (or similar), but we digress. Full press release past the break.

Update: For clarification, the BassJump 2 is physically identical the first. According to Twelve South, its updated software is the key new feature and can be downloaded for free if you already own a BassJump.

[Thanks, Brendan]

Newton ties rookie QB mark with 7th rushing TD

updated 3:36 p.m. ET Oct. 23, 2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton ran for his seventh touchdown Sunday, tying a record for most rushing scores by a rookie quarterback since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

Newton blew past two Redskins defenders on a 16-yard keeper on the Panthers' first drive of the second half. That tied him with Vince Young, who set the mark with Tennessee in 2006.

Bachmann brushes off idea she's given up on NH (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is brushing off the idea that her campaign is all but giving up on winning the New Hampshire primary.

The Associated Press reported last week that an exodus in New Hampshire cost Bachmann her staff in the first-in-the-nation primary state.

The Minnesota congresswoman tells "Fox News Sunday" that she's replacing the New Hampshire staff and is focused on Iowa because its caucuses are scheduled Jan. 3, before the New Hampshire primary.

Bachmann has spent little time campaigning in New Hampshire, where her message as a social conservative has less appeal than in Iowa or in South Carolina, another state with an early primary.

Nestle cautions on margins as it raises sales goal (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The world's biggest food group Nestle said weakening consumer sentiment in developed markets would make it harder to improve margins as it raised its sales growth outlook for 2011 after beating forecasts for the first nine months.

The Swiss company said price hikes and strong demand in emerging markets allowed it, like other big European food groups, to make up for weakening consumer sentiment in the mature markets of Western Europe and the United States.

The maker of KitKat chocolate bars and Nespresso coffee capsules softened its optimism about margins, however, saying it was looking for an increase this year following a more confident tone at its half-year results in August

"For the year as a whole, in spite of input cost pressures, we expect to slightly over-perform against our long-term organic growth range of 5-6 percent and continue to strive for a margin improvement in constant currencies," Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said in a statement on Thursday.

Underlying sales at the owner of brands such as Perrier, Maggi, Carnation and Nescafe rose 7.3 percent, down from 7.5 percent in the first half, but beating forecasts for a 7.1 percent rise in a Reuters poll.

"Very solid set of figures with a clear beat of consensus at the organic growth and raises its guidance," Kepler Capital Markets analyst Jon Cox said. He noted Nestle had tweaked its margin outlook comment to say it is "striving" for an increase in constant currencies. "That may raise some eyebrows."

Asked about this change in wording, Nestle Investor Relations head Roddy Child-Villiers said: "Consumer sentiment has turned down in Europe and the United States. So if we say 'striving', we're just taking into account the tougher environment."

"We're still committed to the Nestle model and working to achieve a margin improvement," he told a conference call.

Nestle shares fell 1 percent to 51.05 francs by 0805 GMT, in line with the STOXX 600 Europe food & beverages index.

GLOOMY CONSUMERS

Nestle achieved volume growth of 4.1 percent and raised prices by 3.2 percent between January and September. It said in a presentation the underlying sales growth contribution was more weighted to pricing as the year progressed.

Child-Villiers confirmed this year's input costs would increase at the upper end of a 2.5-3 billion francs range.

Emerging markets remained the growth driver with 13.1 percent underlying sales growth and Child-Villiers said there was no sign of a slowdown in these markets, including China.

Nestle spoke, however, of a challenging environment in developed markets which only grew 4.0 percent.

Vontobel's Jean-Philippe Bertschy noted a slowdown in Europe in the third quarter to 3.4 percent underlying sales growth from 7.7 percent in the second quarter.

"Water was particularly hit due to unfavorable weather in Europe with a flat volume growth in the third quarter."

Overall sales in Swiss francs fell 15.1 percent, severely impacted by the franc's strength versus other currencies, to 60.9 billion Swiss francs, short of the 61.9 billion franc forecast in the Reuters poll.

Nestle shares, which have lost about 6 percent so far this year, compared with a 3.6 percent drop in the sector index, trade at about 15.9 times estimated 2012 earnings, at a premium to Danone on 14.4 and Unilever on 14.1.

Videos Not Interactive Enough For You? Make Them Go Up to 11 With Viewbix

ViewbixI love finding services that bring value to small businesses. Viewbix falls squarely into that category. ViewBix comes from the founders of Qoof, who gave agencies and advertisers a way to easily create interactive videos. The need for customization, however, tended to bring a lot of friction to the selling process. For SMBs, it was pretty much completely out of scope. This was frustrating for Qoof's founders, who were noticing growing demand in that vertical.

La Russa's moves pay off, Cards win Series opener

(AP) ? Sometimes, it seems Tony La Russa wishes he could put a dozen more players in his dugout. Just imagine how many moves he could make then.

The St. Louis manager employed most of his roster Wednesday night, mixing and matching his way through Game 1 of the World Series and guiding the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers.

La Russa looked like a genius once again, especially when Allen Craig pinch-hit for ace Chris Carpenter and delivered a go-ahead single in the sixth inning. The slicing drive of reliever Alexi Ogando fell inches of sliding right fielder Nelson Cruz ? the opener was that tight throughout a cold, damp evening.

It was a game perfectly suited for La Russa ? lots of bunts, intentional walks and pitching changes. And in a postseason in which he's made all the right moves, the 67-year-old boss who's spent more than half his life as a big league manager was at the top of his game.

"It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out," Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman said. "But I feel like we have to win the National League-style games if we're going to win this thing and tonight was a National League-style game ? 3-2, good pitching, good defense, timely hitting.

"I don't think that we want to get into a gorilla-ball-type series with these guys. We'll see what happens when we add the DH and go to the American League ballpark, but I think when we have the National League style and we have the advantage we have to capitalize," he said.

Texas star Michael Young could appreciate that. Sort of.

"This is real baseball. Your pitcher has to hit. More decisions come into play. A little more strategy comes into play," he said. "I enjoy this style of baseball a little more."

St. Louis used 17 of its 25 players, including five relievers.

The Cardinals even won without their Rally Squirrel. There were no sightings of the elusive critter still roaming Busch Stadium ? good thing for the rodent, too, because La Russa probably would've devised a way to catch him.

Game 2 is Thursday night, with Jaime Garcia starting for the Cards against Colby Lewis. Texas has not lost two straight games since Aug. 23-25.

The key sequences in Game 1 came in the sixth inning. In the top half, first baseman Albert Pujols helped prevent Texas from taking the lead on Carpenter's final pitch in the sixth, making a sliding stop on Young's bid for a hit.

It was still 2-all in the bottom half when Rangers starter C.J. Wilson worked around eighth-place hitter Nick Punto with a four-pitch walk that put runners at the corners with two outs.

"I know they had either Carpenter coming up or a pinch-hitter, and with Ogando warming up behind me, I have confidence that he's going to come in and get that guy out," Wilson said.

La Russa did not hesitate, pulling Carpenter and sending up Craig, a versatile player who was injured for much of the season. Texas manager Ron Washington countered by bringing in the hard-throwing Ogando.

Rather risky lately, trying to play baseball chess with La Russa. As Washington said a day earlier: "Well, I don't think I can ever live up to matching a wit with Tony La Russa."

La Russa liked Craig's chances, even though not everything was tilted in his favor.

"Cold weather game, sitting on the bench, Ogando. It's not a very good situation," La Russa said. "But he's got a history in our system, that's why we like him so much. He should have a really good career."

All the pieces in place, it was time to play ? and what followed was the play of the game.

Craig swung through two fastballs, then hit a drive toward the right field line. Cruz tried to make a sliding catch, except the ball bounced just before it reached him and thudded off his left leg for an RBI single.

"It was close. I think the dirt caught me," Cruz said.

Craig's single scored NL championship series MVP David Freese, the St. Louis-area prep star who led off with a double. Freese has hit in 11 straight postseason games.

"Man, he's tough," Craig said of Ogando. "He came right at me with fastballs, and I missed the first two. Then that last one I was trying to get the barrel on it, make the defense make a play. Fortunate, kept it fair, and Cruz made a great attempt on that. It was a great play all around."

Ahead, La Russa coaxed three scoreless innings from his deep bullpen. Jason Motte closed for his fifth save of the postseason.

This was the first time Texas had ever played in St. Louis. Yet Josh Hamilton, Cruz and the big-hitting Rangers looked a lot like the team that fizzled at the plate in last year's World Series against San Francisco.

Each team wound up with six hits. The wild-card Cardinals just did more with them.

Berkman put St. Louis ahead by chopping a two-run single in the fourth. Mike Napoli tied it with a two-run homer in the fifth.

Carpenter earned his eighth postseason win, breaking the team record he shared with Bob Gibson. Of course, all of Gibby's victories came in the World Series.

Wilson fell to 0-5 in his last seven postseason starts, including last year.

The Texas lefty recently spent 2? minutes in a Dallas cryotherapy chamber, where liquid nitrogen lowered the temperature to 295 degrees below zero, trying to speed body recovery. It was a bit warmer at the ballpark, at 49 degrees for the first pitch.

Wilson became the first pitcher to lose an All-Star game, an AL division series game, an AL championship series game and a World Series game in the same year, STATS LLC said.

"I felt like I was throwing the ball pretty well tonight, giving up a ground ball right there that scores two runs. That's unfortunate. Other than that, I minimized the damage and pitched pretty strategically to the guys I wanted to," Wilson said.

NOTES: Wilson issued two intentional walks in a game for the first time in his career. ... Rhodes, in his 20th big league season, made his World Series debut. ... China vaccinates 4.5 mln people in fight against polio (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? China vaccinated 4.5 million children and young adults over the last five weeks in the western region of Xinjiang in a fight against polio after the disease paralysed 17 people and killed one of them, the World Health Organisation said.

Polio has broken out in China for the first time since 1999 and scientists say the strain originated from Pakistan. The outbreak marked the latest setback to a global campaign to eradicate polio, now endemic in only four countries -- Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Nigeria.

"Even if they don't come down with any symptoms (carriers), by giving them polio vaccine we make that person less infectious," said Oliver Rosenbauer, WHO spokesman for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in Geneva.

All 17 polio cases occurred in Hotan prefecture in the province of Xinjiang and the patients fell ill between early July and mid-September. The Geneva-based WHO assumes that for every case it finds, there would be 199 others infected with the virus without displaying symptoms, he added.

In large vaccination drives that started in early September, health workers have since vaccinated 4.5 million people with three doses each of the polio vaccine, the WHO said.

Patients and carriers of polio can shed the virus for up to eight weeks in their stools, and transmission occurs through contact with contaminated objects and sewage water. With vaccination, patients and carriers will be infectious for 1-2 weeks.

"We are sensitising disease surveillance in large hospitals to look for any child or adult displaying polio-like symptoms. We'll look out for new cases, we hope there won't be," he said in a telephone interview.

Polio has flu-like symptoms such as fever, nausea, headache and can result in paralysis within 24 to 72 hours. There is no cure for polio, and doctors only manage their symptoms.

CHALLENGE REMAINS

Rosenbauer said polio-free countries will be at risk of reinfection if they do not sustain high immunisation rates and without strong political will to eradicate the disease.

"The rest of the world may be polio-free but because it is a communicable disease and people travel, polio-free countries can become reinfected ... this is what we are seeing in western China," Rosenbauer said.

There have been new 444 cases of polio globally so far this year, a quarter of that in Pakistan. There were 1,349 reported cases in 2010.

"Pakistan - it's our biggest problem in 2011," Rosenbauer said. "Just as China can become reinfected, so can polio-free areas in Pakistan become reinfected."

Eradication efforts are thwarted by conflict as well as logistical and technical problems.

"Vaccinating children during these immunisation campaigns more often than not is compromised because of conflict and it is too dangerous for vaccination teams. They have to negotiate with local leaders to obtain safe passage," Rosenbauer said, referring to southern areas in Afghanistan and tribal areas in Pakistan.

(AP) ? Yemen's embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh charged Sunday that foreign diplomats have been misled by the country's opposition and are conveying false information about the situation in Yemen.

Saleh's criticism came before a scheduled meeting this week at the U.N. Security Council to discuss a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire and transfer of power.

On Sunday Saleh's security forces opened fire on protesters, killing at least seven.

Addressing military officials, Saleh said the foreign ambassadors, "move from one opposition to the other, collect information and consider the information they get from the opposition as they if they are the victim whom they should support."

Saleh clings to power despite more than nine months of street protests, inspired by popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt.

He has balked at signing a deal backed by his powerful neighbors and the U.S. in hopes of providing a smooth transition of power. Under the agreement, Saleh would resign and hand power to his vice president in return for immunity from prosecution.

According to a Yemeni foreign ministry official, the Gulf Cooperation Council, which initiated the power transfer deal, has turned down a request by Saleh to make changes to the deal to enable him to stay in power until 2013. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

In his speech, Saleh described the opposition as "insane (people) who can't sleep and only want to take power."

Saleh's remarks, broadcast on Yemeni state TV, came as his security forces fired at protesters marching through the capital and a southern city, killing at least five people, according to a medical official.

Mohammed al-Qubati, the director of a field hospital at Sanaa's main protest site dubbed "Change Square", also said four civilians and at least 37 people were wounded in the violence there.

Witnesses said snipers on rooftops opened fire on the crowd of tens of thousands of protesters, marching through the streets to call for Saleh's resignation.

Loyalist forces of the Republican Guard, a unit led by Saleh's son Ahmed, also lobbed tear gas at the demonstrators.

Witnesses said that the Republican Guard clashed near Change Square with the anti-government troops of renegade army general Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, who defected and joined protests months ago. Two of al-Ahmar forces were killed.

In a statement, Al-Ahmar described Saleh as "the ignorant man who does nothing but killings."

Saleh's security forces also tried Sunday to disperse a large protest in the southern Yemeni city of Taiz, killing one woman and injuring seven other people, medical officials there said.

On Saturday, security forces fired on a huge rally of some 300,000 people in Sanaa, killing at least 12 protesters and wounding some 300.

Hospital superbug debugged

ScienceDaily (Oct. 13, 2011) ? An international team of scientists led by Monash University researchers has uncovered how a common hospital bacterium becomes a deadly superbug that kills increasing numbers of hospital patients worldwide and accounts for an estimated $3.2 billion each year in health care costs in the US alone. Their findings appear October 13th in the Open Access journal PLoS Pathogens.

Team leader Dr Dena Lyras and lead author Dr Glen Carter, from the Monash University School of Biomedical Sciences, have linked a naturally occurring mutation in the microorganism Clostridium difficile to severe and debilitating diarrhea in hospital patients undergoing antibiotic therapy. These antibiotics destroy the 'good' bacteria in the gut, which allows this 'bad' bacterium to colonise the colon, where it causes bowel infections that are difficult to treat.

"This mutation effectively wipes out an inbuilt disease regulator, called anti-sigma factor TcdC, producing hypervirulent strains of C. difficile that are resistant to antibiotics and which have been found to circulate in Canada, the US, UK, Europe and Australia," Dr Lyras says.

The results suggest that bacterial strains carrying this mutation have the potential to produce more of the harmful toxins that cause disease in susceptible individuals -- commonly patients aged 65 years or over.

Dr. Carter adds, "As we now have a better understanding of these strains, we can design new strategies to prevent, control and treat these infections."

Gross' PIMCO makes a big move into mortgages (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Bill Gross, manager of the world's largest bond fund, ramped up buying of mortgage-backed securities in September on the likelihood the Federal Reserve's reinvestment program in those securities will boost prices significantly.

Gross increased mortgage debt to 38 percent of assets in his $242 billion PIMCO Total Return Fund (PTTRX.O) in September, from 32 percent in August, as the U.S. central bank announced last month that it "will now reinvest principal payments from its holdings of agency debt and agency mortgage-backed securities in agency mortgage-backed securities."

PIMCO's latest bet on mortgages isn't going unnoticed.

Gross, who helps oversee $1.2 trillion as co-chief investment officer at PIMCO, made headlines earlier this year and came under heavy criticism when the manager widely known as the "bond king" bet heavily against U.S. Treasuries -- one of the biggest outperformers of this year.

His move into mortgage-backed securities also comes as the PIMCO Total Return fund's cash equivalents and money-market securities fell to negative 19 percent September, from negative 9 percent in August.

In having a so-called negative position in cash equivalents and money-market securities, it is an indication of derivative use and short-term securities being put up as collateral as a way to boost leverage and increase the fund's holdings in bonds with longer maturities such as mortgage-backed securities, Treasuries and corporate bonds, according to Eric Jacobson, director of fixed-income research at Morningstar who has covered PIMCO for more than a decade.

Over the years, some analysts in the fixed-income world have pointed out that Gross' use of derivatives to boost leverage and exposure to higher-yielding assets is what distinguishes the Total Return Fund from an ordinary plain vanilla bond fund.

"One very basic thing to know, too, is that PIMCO classifies anything with a duration of one year or shorter as cash -- regardless of sector," Jacobson added.

Jacobson said after careful examination of the PIMCO fund's effective duration of 7.14 years -- about double over the last six months -- "it doesn't necessarily mean PIMCO raised their pure interest-rate risk to the United States. They didn't double down on Treasuries."

Rather, PIMCO took on "loose" interest rate risk to other credit and government markets, he said, noting that the Total Return fund increased exposure in non-U.S. developed and emerging markets securities in September.

Duration is a bond's sensitivity to interest rate fluctuations, and going longer duration is an investment strategy when rates are expected to remain low or drop further and vice versa.

All told, the PIMCO Total Return fund's bad call on Treasuries earlier this year has cost it.

It is up only 1.06 percent year to date versus the benchmark BarCap U.S. Aggregate Index which is up 3.99 percent. But on a three-year basis, the fund is up 10.14 percent against the benchmark's 9.36 percent returns. The fund has also held up well over the last five years, with the fund up 7.80 percent versus the BarCap's 5.48 percent returns.

Automotive History ? The Joke's On U.S.- The ... - Curbside Classic

Every once in a while, a visionary, iconoclastic automotive pioneer bursts on the scene and, bucking the long odds and naysaying ?conventional wisdom?, delivers a disruptive new line of cars. Frequently, that new model sets the status quo on its ear and forever changes the way we think about (and react to) our transportation needs. Those brave revolutionaries almost single handedly redefine their market segment and leave an indelible mark on the industry itself. Today?s story, though, has nothing to do with anybody like that. Our narrative today is of a modern P.T. Barnum and the circus freak show that he brought to America in the twilight of the Reagan years. The man is Malcom Bricklin. The car is the Yugo.

It?s well nigh impossible to understand the Yugo episode without understanding the guiding hand behind what is generally considered to be the worst car ever offered for sale in the U.S. Malcom Bricklin had been knocking around the car industry for over a quarter century when he spotted a Yugo 45 on a London street in 1984. Unfortunately, Bricklin was smitten by the car?s simple mediocrity and, just like a cartoon character with outsized dollar signs for eyes, he began the process for bringing the homely little car to the states. At that time, Bricklin was probably best known for the eponymous car that he launched amidst much fanfare in 1974.

The Bricklin SV-1 was remembered for several interesting features: lurid (?safety?) colors , no cigarette lighter (Bricklin was a rabid non-smoker) , and most importantly, the ability to vacuum piles of money from the gullible government of New Brunswick, Canada. With an estimated cost of $16,000 each to build against a selling price of around $5K, Bricklin?s SV-1 was a blast furnace that no amount of subsidy could fully quench. The maritime province had sunk over four and a half million taxpayer dollars into the scheme since its beginning, and slow sales (along with numerous engineering problems) cost no small number of politicians their jobs. The New Brunswick government pulled the plug in September of 1975 and the Bricklin was finished.

But before Bricklin made a virtue of safety, he all but made a mockery of same just a half decade before. In 1968, Bricklin thought that what America needed was an air cooled two cylinder car that could make zero to sixty in thirty seven agonizing seconds. Thus American drivers were introduced to the second worst car ever sold- the tiny, dangerously underpowered 360 from Subaru.

To say that the 360 was unsuited to American driving norms is to wildly overpraise the car. With just 25 horsepower (at a cacophonous 5500 RPM), the elfin 360 was the type of cynical exercise that would define Bricklin?s career in the car business. Introduced at an offer price of just under $1300 , the little Subaru made much of its over 60 MPG fuel economy and low cost of ownership. The car was a modest success with just under 8000 sold in the first year, but when the 360 was pilloried by Consumer Reports as being ?unacceptable? because of its numerous safety issues, the bottom dropped out of the venture and the last few cars sat on dealers lots for years before they were practically given away.

As noted, Bricklin first noticed the subcompact Yugo on the streets of London and within a couple of months, he had set up his first meet and greet with the management at Zastava . His shaky little import business was marketing Bertone X/19?s after Fiat said arrivederci in 1982, but the end of that venture was in sight. With no new product in the pipeline, Bricklin would either have to find another car to flog or get an honest job, so there was a mutual meshing of interests when he arranged a visit to the Red Banner Factory in Yugoslavia that turned out the new apple of his eye in 1984.

What he saw was an operation that turned out a car designed (and abandoned) by Fiat years before. The Yugo was based on a mash up of models 127 and 128 built under license by a wildly unproductive workforce in an obsolete factory with assembly quality that made real mid 70?s Fiats look hand built. At first glance, the car looked up to date- Front wheel drive, rack and pinion steering, decent mileage. But the little Yugo turned out to be a lot less than the sum of its parts. Quality (or a lack of same) would ensure that the car could not survive in a competitive marketplace. The running gear would be the 1.1 Litre straight four that Zastava had learned to build from Fiat and the transmission would be a truly nasty four speed manual. An automatic wouldn?t fit in the Yugo engine bay, so the only thing shiftless about the Yugo would be the Zastava workers that routinely drank on the job. Lack of an automatic would hamper the car during all but the final year in the states. But Bricklin assured his erstwhile investors that the car could be made ready for the U.S. market with some minor tweaks.

459 tweaks (and 18 months) later, the Yugo was almost ready for launch. Bricklin had formed Yugo of America to import the car and as was his custom, financial shenanigans were part of the mix. Bricklin used franchise fees to run the company (a major accounting no-no) while the car was being modified for safety and emissions certification in the U.S. and dealerships were sold, territories assigned. With the pullout of Fiat, Renault and the British makes just a few years before, there was a general sense that room existed in the market for any european nameplate that could build a reasonably priced car that returned good fuel economy and high build quality.

Well, as they say, two out of three ain?t bad. The Yugo?s bait was a stunningly low MSRP of just $3990. This was almost $1100 lower than the cheapest Chevy Sprint and lower than even the Hyundai Excel. The Yugo became the default entry level car for people that knew the price of everything but the value of nothing. Even though the price was a come on (dealers larded as many options onto the car as they could get away with, see below), America was hooked. When the Yugo GV was finally offered for sale in September 1985, (as an ?86 model) , initial orders looked promising. But after a slow start because of supply problems, the car began selling in volume during year two. Maybe Bricklin had caught lightning in a bottle.

Or maybe not. As the pride of Serbo-Croatia hit the streets of America, reports of slipshod assembly began flooding back to the company?s Upper Saddle River , New Jersey headquarters. Substandard seatbelt anchors, collapsing seats, hard starting, no starting, the list was endless. It?s hard to pinpoint a weak spot on a Yugo because every system in the car was so badly designed and assembled that the whole car was a no contact accident. Warranty claims were dreadful. Sales quickly slowed when word of the myriad problems began to circulate in the media. Bricklin?s old nemesis Consumer Reports weighed in on the cars many shortcomings in its February 1986 issue and refused to recommend it at any price. Motor Trend reported that their hand picked press ringer broke down during testing.

Just as quickly as the Yugo ascended to number two in european import sales, the car plummeted back to earth and never rose again. By May of 1988, Malcom Bricklin needed a lifeboat and he found it on Wall Street. A minor investment bank salvaged Bricklins investment in the venture in a complicated deal that settled some of his stale old debts and sent him far away from Yugo America. Bricklin wisely took the first offer and netted about $20 million for his trouble.

The car itself staggered on until early 1992, with steadily declining sales and a dealer network that was slowly (and then quickly) going bankrupt. Sales ended in the U.S. that year when a recall was ordered by the feds over emissions issues related to faulty carburetors.

There are lots of related legacies connected with America?s brief, mad affair with the Yugo. Before we wrap, let?s sort them out.

Zastava- Zastava made Yugos even after they stopped selling in America. By third world standards, the Yugo was not a terribly bad car and sales continued even after its mother country began breaking up in the early 90?s. The last Yugo that we would recognize rolled off the assembly line in November 2008.

Yugoslavia- The ?Land Of The Southern Slavs? went to war with itself in late 1991 and essentially spent the next 17 years shooting, ethnically cleansing and generally behaving like it had before World War I. After the death of Marshal Tito in 1980, long simmering Balkan feuds became a way of life and continue there to this day. Only with the threat of armed intervention by Nato and the UN is an uneasy peace maintained.

Yugo America- The importer of the eponymous car that had been the talk of the industry just a few years earlier filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation in 1991. Since Yugo America was basically just a collection of cheap office furniture and unanswered phones, creditors received essentially nothing for their interests in the company. Unpaid claims included some warranty work done by dealers on Yugos before sales collapsed.

Malcom Bricklin- The twice bankrupt Bricklin has resurfaced periodically over the years, always pushing the latest crack brained scheme to sell a car that would occupy the place that his Yugo once did- the bottom rung of the American market. His last notable brush with the automotive world (in 2004) involved a vague alliance with (uh-oh) Chinese auto maker Chery. Amidst mutual finger pointing, the deal collapsed in July 2008 as the erstwhile partners took turns suing one another in federal court. Bricklin is still nominally involved with a venture called Visionary Vehicles and appears on its website today. The end of his Yugo adventure left him short of funds to repay an impressive list of creditors, investors and employees and even the IRS took its pound of flesh later on. He lost his house, his fortune? And the dozens of Yugo GV?s that he received as part of his settlement with his bankers.

So we come to the end of the Yugo saga in America. I would venture to guess that there are fewer than 500 running condition Yugos still on the road in the U.S. (most of which ?need a little TLC?) Anybody that ever owned one of these little mobile gulags will tell you that there was nothing loveable, cute or endearing about them. They were an object lesson in the old adage that you get what you pay for. It?s unfortunate that the vast majority of Yugo owners didn?t even get that.

Transformers Fall of Cybertron Announced ... - Bits 'n' Bytes Gaming

Optimus Prime wielding axe

Transforming and Rolling Out in Autumn 2012

Activision announced this week that High Moon Studios, the team responsible for 2010?s excellent Transformers game, War for Cybertron, will be releasing a new game in the sub-franchise.

You may recall that High Moon Studios last worked on the video game adaptation of summer blockbuster, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It was a pretty average game (about a terrible movie) that was no doubt hindered by the limitations that movie franchises tend to bring. Nevertheless, Game Informer states that High Moon Studios has taken a lot of fan feedback on-board concerning the War for Cybertron series and has essentially gone back to the drawing board to create an improved follow-up to the 2010 hit. The game promises to deliver a much darker tone to the Transformers series.

Fall of Cybertron will be appearing on the cover of Game Informer?s November issue and if you haven?t seen the artwork yet, we strongly suggest you head over to their website and bask in the awesomeness of Optimus Prime. You may even see that a certain Transformer of jurassic proportions is there too. That?s right, the Dinobots have been confirmed for Fall of Cybertron. Rumours also suggest that we?ll see transforming city Metroplex and Bruticus (the combined form of the Combaticons) making an appearance too.

Fall of Cybertron will be released for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Kidnap victims allegedly held in Mexican jail (AP)

MONTERREY, Mexico ? Several police officers in northern Mexico allowed a violent drug gang to hold kidnap victims in the local jail while ransom payments were being negotiated, a state official said Thursday.

Hours later, the navy reported finding 32 bodies in three houses in the Gulf coast seaport of Veracruz, where just two weeks ago 35 tortured bodies were dumped in front of shocked motorists on a main avenue. The first incident appeared tied to fighting between rival drug cartels, but officials did not immediately say if Thursday's find was drug releated.

The scandal at the northern prison came to light this week when state and federal police freed two kidnapping victims from jail cells in Juarez. Investigators believe that the victims were abducted by the extremely violent Zetas cartel and that the officers were working for the Zetas, Domene said.

Four police officers from Juarez, a suburb of the city of Monterrey, are being held pending further investigation, said Jorge Domene, the security spokesman for Nuevo Leon state.

Local police in northern Mexico have often been bribed or threatened to work for drug gangs by providing them with information, protecting their activities or detaining and turning over members of rival gangs.

Domene noted that last weekend, the Nuevo Leon attorney general's office detained 73 local policemen from a half dozen communities in the state who confessed to having performed various services for gangs, including spying, acting as lookouts, and carrying out killings and kidnappings.

Authorities then conducted background checks on 99 other officers, 21 of whom were fired after refusing to cooperate. Forty-three have passed the checks so far.

The bloodshed in Veracruz appears related to a drug gang's challenge to the Zetas cartel, the violent gang that has been expanding its control of drug markets and trafficking routes, Mexican officials said.

A gang thought to be aligned with the Sinaloa cartel is apparently striking at the Zetas, who took control of the drug trade in Veracruz last year.

President Felipe Calderon decided last week to deploy federal police and security forces to the state of Veracruz.

The Mexician navy said all 32 bodies were found Thursday. it said Veracruz state agents found the first 20 inside a house in a residential neighrbohood. A search in a home at another subdivision yielded 11 more bodies, and the final body was discovered later in a third house.

President Felipe Calderon mentioned the problem of corruption in local police forces during a speech Thursday. A government report in September said many local officers still earn $350 a month or less, despite reform efforts aimed at increasing wages and decreasing corruption.

"We have barely been in time to put the brakes on organized crime in the first stages, but in some towns, in some areas of the country, they have infiltrated authorities in a practically symbiotic relationship," Calderon said during a speech to members of the business community Thursday.

He noted that in some instances, citizens who have filed complaints with police have been contacted immediately after by angry criminals, suggesting they were in league with the authorities.

Calderon ordered a deployment of federal police, soldiers and sailors to Acapulco and other cities in the Pacific coastal state of Guerrero, members of his security Cabinet said Thursday.

Acapulco has seen a surge in drug-related killings in the past year, Interior Secretary Francisco Blake Mora said.

In Sinaloa state, federal police said they detained two U.S. citizens for allegedly carrying two metric tons of marijuana in their motor home. Officers found the marijuana when they were called to a road rollover Wednesday, a statement said.

A man and woman from San Diego, California, were detained and are in the custody of federal prosecutors, the statement said. It said neither was seriously injured.
