Seagate Backup Plus
In a world teeming with portable hard drive choices, Seagate's GoFlex line is noteworthy for its versatility and sprightly performance. As successor to the venerable GoFlex line, the newly-minted Backup Plus line represents Seagate's next wave of drives. But not all successors are successes, and the new Backup Plus (1TB) ($139.99 direct) has some big shoes to fill. How does it fare? As it turns out, quite well. With brisk performance, a smart user interface that uniquely incorporates social networking, and its versatile USM (Universal Storage Module) adapter, the Backup Plus is a fully realized product that ultimately outshines the GoFlex line and, accordingly, is the rightful heir of the Editors' Choice for portable hard drives, previously held by the Seagate GoFlex Turbo (750GB) ($169.99 list, 4.5 stars).
Design and Features
Measuring 0.5 by 3 by 4.75 inches (HWD) with the USM (a proprietary interface) adapter (and 0.5 by 3 by 4.4 inches without), the Backup Plus's compact chassis is complemented by its tasteful, low-key aesthetic. While our test unit was black, it also comes in silver, blue, and red. Constructed entirely out of plastic, its primary visual flourish is the brushed faux-metallic finish on the lid, with the Seagate logo on its lower right side. While I prefer the sturdiness of a metallic drive along the lines of, say, the Western Digital My Passport Studio (1TB) ($179.99 list, 4 stars), the Backup Plus is nonetheless a handsome drive that, at either 5.4 or 5.9 ounces (depending on whether the USM adapter is attached), can easily slip into a laptop bag without adding any noticeable heft.
The real draw is the USM adapter, which securely fastens to the rear of the drive in the same manner as the GoFlex line. As was the case with the GoFlex Turbo, the USM adapters are available for USB 3.0 (tested), FireWire, and Thunderbolt. While some may find fault with having to shell out the extra cash for additional adapters, it's nonetheless a cheaper option than purchasing a new drive altogether, not to mention the added convenience of using the same drive rather than transferring your data over another for the sake of employing a different connection method.
Once you plug the drive into a PC, you see a revamped version of Seagate's Dashboard program. The new Dashboard was clearly designed with simplicity in mind, as its clean interface presents three options: Protect, Share, and Save. The Protect category allows users perform a back-up manually or automatically, as well as create customized back-up plans. The Dashboard's true gem lies in the Save category, where files uploaded to a Facebook or Flickr account are either manually or automatically stored in a folder within the Backup Plus. Sure enough, after posting some test snapshots to my Facebook wall from my smartphone, they showed up in my Backup Plus. It's an innovative and simple method to store all your pictures or videos on a single location. The Dashboard's Share feature is somewhat less impressive, as it simply allows you to upload files from your Backup Plus directly to your Facebook account. While I typically appreciate the notion of skipping the Facebook interface to upload images, this function is not nearly as impressive as the Share feature.
The Backup Plus comes formatted for NTFS but can be reformatted for Macs. The only shortcoming in this regard is the "Protect" feature of the Dashboard, as it's not Mac-compatible. This isn't necessarily a fatal flaw since Mac users can perform the same task via Time Machine. Mac users can still utilize the rest of the Backup Plus's abundant set of features. In comparison, the Clickfree C6 Portable (1TB) ($150 street, 4 stars), is not compatible with Macs.
Performance
Although the drive we received from Seagate came equipped with USB 3.0, Seagate's USM adapters come in three flavors?FireWire, Thunderbolt, and USB 3.0. Using USB 3.0 (via the USM adapter's Micro B Port), the Backup Plus outpaced every portable drive in its class. It copied our 1.22GB test folder in a blazing 15 seconds, sprinting ahead of the Clickfree C6 (17 seconds) as well as the GoFlex Turbo (750GB) (18 seconds). Although a difference of a few seconds may initially seem negligible, the distinction becomes more pronounced when multiple large files are transferred. The Backup Plus's USB 3.0 speeds resoundingly trumped the WD My Passport Studio (1TB) using FireWire (31 seconds). Although USB 2.0 predictably yielded slower speeds for the Backup Plus (40 seconds), its USB 2.0 speed nonetheless surpassed that of the WD My Passport Studio (44 seconds) and the Clickfree C6 (41 seconds).
In the PCMark05 test, the Backup Plus yielded remarkable scores of 6,463 (via USB 3.0) and 3,125 (via USB 2.0), handily edging out the GoFlex Turbo's USB 3.0 score (6,025). The Backup Plus likewise yielded excellent results in the PCMark7 test, finishing with 1,449 (via USB 3.0) and 1,244 (via USB 2.0), easily edging out the Clickfree C6 Portable's scores of 1,406 (via USB 3.0) and 1,232 (via USB 2.0). The GoFlex Turbo's PCMark7 score of 1,498 with USB 3.0 was the lone instance in which the Backup Plus was outpaced, and since it was by a scant 49 points, it amounts to little more than a light drizzle on the Backup Plus's otherwise triumphant parade.
While the Seagate Backup Plus bears the imprimatur of the GoFlex line, its numerous attributes prevent it from standing in the lengthy shadow cast by its formidable GoFlex forebears. With its better user interface, faster performance, and innovative incorporation of social networking, the Backup Plus manages to outshine its predecessors, and sets the standard for future drives in the process, earning our Editors' Choice for portable hard drives.

Things are getting hot and heavy in Zynga's newest Facebook game.?That is, if you consider some PG-rated?virtual sex to be hot and heavy.?
Following the success of games like "FarmVille," "CityVille" and "CastleVille," Facebook gaming giant?Zynga this week?launched its latest Ville game which is called simply?"The Ville."
This strategy-based life simulation?game lets players create a personalized avatar, build a home and live out virtual relationships.?And according to Zynga executive producer David Gray who spoke to CNET, the avatars in the game can (gasp!) make whoopee. Yes, whoopee.
Gray told CNET that it works like this:
...when someone is in your house and you begin to interact with them, you can level up by interacting with them in ways that the game sees as romantic. As you climb the experience tree, you eventually unlock the capability to initiate the "happiness home run," or just "whoopee"
Based on some of?the breathy Zynga?sex-related headlines making the Internet rounds this week (the above one included), this virtual sex business?may sound like?risque?stuff.
It is not.
Prudes (or concerned parents) can rest assured, making whoopee is pretty tame stuff. There is, apparently, partial disrobing before floating hearts cover the bedroom. Hide?your eyes! It's FLOATING HEARTS!?
Meanwhile, Zynga's frisky avatars are hardly the first to get it on Facebook style.
It's not an overstatement to say that "The Ville" has taken a whole lot of cues from the long-running, best-selling "Sims" games from?Electronic Arts -- and specifically from the new "Sims Social" game on Facebook. And those randy?Sims characters have been making quite a lot of woo-hoo (not to be confused with whoopee)?on Facebook for months now.
In fact,?In January, EA released this?infographic, announcing that "Sims Social" avatars make whoo-hoo?680,000 times per day. And here is the whoo-hoo in action. C'mon,?you know you want to see it:

I voted no on that bill for a lot of reasons, but I didn't have the time, nor I suspect did many Members of Congress have the time, to read it before we were required to vote on it.?

Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was the center of GOP focus. Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa put up a poster of Brian. Agent Terry is the motivation to find out the truth about Fast & Furious; the Terry family has been grieving for 18 months trying to find answers to Brian's death.
Issa wants to know: Who thought of this operation? Who approved it? How far up did it go on the command chain?
The Democrats were concerned that the GOP was playing politics. Democrats said little or nothing about Brian Terry, only a few even bothered mentioning him before they spewed out their typical liberal talking points to protect Mr. Holder.
The victims of Fast & Furious are what matter in this case.

Vision Don't trim what you can't see. Use small sweeping motions to reduce the overgrowth of hedges. Survey the plant material before you start and remove any hazards. Watch out for utility wires, nests, fences, walls, vines and animals.
Caliper Determine the maximum caliper that the hedge trimmer can cut. Understand what it means by measuring a branch if necessary.
Shapes Avoid creating cookie-cutter shapes with shrubbery. Allow the bush to follow its natural shape, or make a natural slope of narrower at the top than the bottom.
Equipment Check that your hedge trimmers and other equipment is in good shape before attempting to use it, whether for the first time or for any other time after that.
Equipment Maintenance Use the right type of power. If your hedge trimmer takes gas for fuel, find out before filling up the tank whether it has the proper mixture of oil and gas or uses straight gas. Batteries should be charged or replaced as needed. Maintain the blades and store the device as recommended. Keep tools locked up safely until it's time to use them.

Buoyed by orders from clients in the US and Japan, Arima Communications is expected to ship six million smartphones in 2012, according to an industry estimate.
Company chairman Stephen Lee stated recently that Arima is transitioning into a smartphone ODM with smartphone models currently accounting for over 60% of total shipments, and 70% of total revenues.
Arima has landed orders for two 4G/LTE smartphones as well as some 3.5G models for the entry-level to mid-range segment, and all of those models will help drive up shipments and revenues in 2012, Lee revealed.
Industry sources indicated that Arima has secured smartphone orders from a number of vendors, including Motorola Mobility, NEC Casio Mobile Communications and Sony Mobile Communications. Arima has begun shipping smartphones to Motorola and NEC and will start volume production for Sony Mobile by the end of 2012, said the sources.
Shipments of smartphones and feature phones to Motorola are likely to account for over 70% of Arima's total handset shipments in 2012, compared to 51% in 2011, revealed the sources.

The news of Emma Stone's casting in "The Amazing Spider-Man" was first met with almost universal approval. She would be the perfect Mary Jane Watson, fans thought. But when her true role as Gwen Stacy became clear, there was almost a bittersweet understanding.
If Gwen is remembered for one thing, it is her death at the hands of the Green Goblin.
When MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with the actress, she told him that the tragic end for the character was what initially drew her into the project. "That was part of the reason why I was kind of drawn to the role, that mark on pop-culture history," she said. "I read all about Gwen, and I thought that was so amazing."
Even with Gwen's death as an iconic moment in comic book history, canon is constantly rewritten for film adaptations. Stone sought answers from the filmmakers as to whether the film version of Gwen would respect the book, and she was pleased with the response.
"I spoke to the people behind the movie, and they said, 'Yeah, we're planning on staying true to the comics.' And I was like, 'If you're making a movie like this, that's something I want to be a part of,' " Stone said. "That is so shocking and horrifying and kind of beautiful in some way. The fact that people unsubscribed and burned their copies — I like anything that causes some kind of upheaval."
Her director Marc Webb couldn't say whether Stone's version of Gwen would meet the same fate in an upcoming installment, but he couldn't deny the allure of working with that moment. "I think that remains to be seen, but let me tell you this: The ultimate tragedy of Gwen Stacy is a really provocative and powerful part of the Spider-Man canon," he said. "I think it would be really extraordinary to explore that, but I don't want to take the wind out of the drama."

There are many articles on the web that discuss how to choose a language school abroad and most of these articles discuss the same points: location, school size, price, hours per week of instruction and cultural activities which are all important items but are
not necessarily going to help you have the best educational experience abroad.? If you?re serious about learning another language, these 5 tips will give you everything you need know to choose the right school for your study abroad program.
1. School Accreditation
Accreditation covers many of the most important aspects about the school and provides quality assurance with regards to teacher?s qualifications, curriculum, facilities, business and accounting practices, homestay & accommodation and student services among other items.? There are various quality assurance schemes in a variety of countries, and some international accrediting organizations as well.? All of these organizations audit their member schools regularly and have exceptionally high standards.? For example, look for accreditation from organizations such as the International Association of Language Centres (IALC), Languages Canada, Qualit? fran?ais langue ?trang?re (Qualit? FLE).? If you don?t know an accrediting organization in the country that you wish to study, contact us, and we will gladly point you in the right direction!
2.? Nationality Mix
What is the nationality mix at the school?? Where do the students come from?? Rarely is this mentioned in articles related to choosing a language school abroad, but it is often the first question asked by students from around the world.? The matter of nationality mix in the classroom is extremely important as students are often surprised and disappointed when they arrive at the school to find 30% ? 50% or more (gasp!) of any one nationality in their classroom ? especially if it?s their own!? As every language group and nationality has different challenges with regards to grammar, pronunciation and so on, you won?t want to be stuck in a 
class where your own language learning needs are left behind by the majority of student?s needs.? Nor do you want to be in a class where many of the pupils are speaking their own language ? which is likely to happen when there is not a good nationality mix.? You should look for a maximum of 20% ? 25% of any one nationality (less is better, of course!) in the school.? A well-established school with a good presence in many countries understands this? and will have an excellent mix of students from around the globe.
3.? English Only Policy / French Only Policy / Chinese Only Policy etc
No matter which language your are studying your school should have a strict ?language only? policy in place to ensure that the language being studied is the common language amongst all the students.? A strict policy may include warnings, fines, daily or weekly suspensions for speaking a language other than the one that is being taught in the school.? So along with good nationality mix, you will find that a strict language policy will help you to advance more quickly in the language you are studying.
4.? Levels of Instruction
Many schools teach only out of textbook and some without a textbook at all.? An accredited language school will have a well-balanced, structured curriculum that generally falls within an internationally recognized scheme of language levels such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).? These schemes provide some standardization in the levels of instruction and methods of measuring language learning achievements. Be sure you are tested upon entry, regularly through the course (usually every 4 weeks) and again upon exit of the course!
5.? Class Size
Class size is far more important than school size and generally a maximum of 15 students should be expected at a private language school; any more students than that and you will lose some of the important personal attention of the teacher as well as necessary interaction to be successful in your language studies.? Class sizes of 6 ? 8 are ideal for active participation and comfort especially if you are a beginner in the language.
