Candidate?Romney?has presented differing profiles during the 2012 campaign.

He struck a hard line during the GOP primary season as he courted conservative voters, but softened his rhetoric on?immigration?after emerging as the likely Republican nominee, seeking to gain ground with Latino voters critical to his chances in the fall against President Barack Obama.

Romney's?campaign is working to woo Hispanics who have supported Democrats in previous presidential elections. Their support is expected to be critical in battleground states such as Nevada, Florida, Virginia and Colorado, where significant populations with Mexican and Central American origins are especially worried about?immigration?policy.

Heading into the leadoff Iowa caucuses in January and facing the challenge of winning over the right-wing GOP base,?Romney?vowed to veto the so-called DREAM Act, a bill backed by Democrats that would create a path to citizenship for illegal?immigrants?brought to the U.S. as children.

Romney's?tough talk bothered many?immigrants. Instead of emphasizing the plight of illegal?immigrants, he focused on the consequences illegal?immigration?has for U.S. jobs.

He hasn't said whether he would reverse Obama's decision this year to stop deporting some illegal?immigrantswho came to the U.S. as children.?Romney?has said Obama's executive order to allow some of them to obtain work permits and stay in the U.S. was problematic because it can be reversed by subsequent presidents.

Complaining that the nation's?immigration?laws have become a "muddle,"?Romney?has called for a national strategy and pledged he would tackle?immigration?during his first year in office.

He's stressed his support for giving legal status to illegal?immigrants?who serve in the military. He favors a U.S.-Mexico border fence. But he's also vowed to "staple a green card" to the diplomas of?immigrants?who receive advanced degrees.

Romney?supports establishing an immigration-status verification system for employers and he would punish them if they hire non-citizens who do not prove their legal status. He backs more visas for holders of advanced degrees in math, science and engineering who have U.S. job offers, and he would award permanent residency to foreign students who graduate from U.S. schools with a degree in those fields.

As governor,?Romney?generally opposed initiatives favored by?immigration?advocates, although they occasionally found common ground.

One of?Romney's?more contentious decisions came late in his term in 2006 when he signed an agreement with federal authorities allowing Massachusetts State Police troopers to arrest and seek deportation of suspected illegal aliens they encounter during their normal duties.

Immigration?activists opposed the initiative, saying it would drive a wedge between?immigrants?and police, discouraging them from reporting crimes or seeking critical services.

Shortly after taking office?Romney's?Democratic successor, Gov. Deval Patrick, rescinded the agreement, saying he wanted to free troopers to focus on gun, gang and drug crimes.

Romney?also pushed for changes to the state's decades-long bilingual education system.

Massachusetts was the first state to adopt bilingual education, but during his 2002 campaign?Romneyembraced an "English immersion" ballot question aimed at replacing two-way bilingual education with one-year, all-English classes intended to move non-English speakers into regular classes as quickly as possible.

Some Hispanic and?immigration?advocates opposed the measure, which won wide public support, but?Romneyfought against efforts to delay implementation of the English-only classes.

He ultimately lost one battle when lawmakers in the Democratic-controlled Legislature created some exemptions to the law and later overrode?Romney's?veto of those exemptions.

Romney?accused lawmakers of "unfathomable arrogance" and flouting the will of voters.

Immigration?advocates found a rare moment of agreement with?Romney?in 2004 when he signed into law the requirement that?immigration?judges warn non-citizen defendants that pleading guilty to certain crimes could ultimately lead to their deportation, even if they were currently in the country legally.

"That was one positive thing that happened during his term," said Eva Millona, executive director of the Massachusetts?Immigrant?and Refugee Advocacy Coalition.

She said that victory was overshadowed by other stances, like?Romney's?opposition to allowing illegalimmigrants?brought to the country as children to pay the same tuition rates at state colleges as legal Massachusetts residents.

"Overall he has been consistent in his misconception about?immigration. We never found him to have a big vision about reform on?immigration?issues," she said. "He lacks understanding and focuses more on politics than policy."

Romney?showed a more personal approach on?immigration?in 2005 after students rallied behind a beloved schoolteacher facing deportation.

Obain Attouoman, then a 42-year-old teacher at Boston's Fenway High School, fled political persecution in the Ivory Coast in 1992 and later applied for asylum in the United States. But he missed a hearing with animmigration?judge in 2001 and was ordered deported.

Romney?joined a chorus of public officials ? including Massachusetts Democratic Sens. Edward Kennedy and John Kerry ? in urging a reprise for Attouoman, who won a delay but was ultimately deported in 2008.

In a letter to then-Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in 2005,?Romney?pleaded Attouoman's case, calling him "a teacher and role model."

"The unique and impassioned effort by these students to convey to our government the important contribution of Mr. Attouoman certainly demonstrates the impact he is having as a member of our education community,"Romney?wrote.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The presidential race is entering the sultry summer, a final lull before the sprint to Election Day, with President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney neck and neck and no sign that either can break away.

"When it's a 2 or 3 point race, that's not good for an incumbent president," said Republican strategist Rich Galen, who is not affiliated with Romney's campaign. "Obama's political career is totally dependent on Angela Merkel holding the eurozone together," he said, referring to the German chancellor and Europe's financial woes, which could further hurt the U.S. economy.

An eventful June began badly for Obama. Anemic job-creation numbers followed news that Romney's campaign was raising more money than his. Things got worse when Obama told reporters, "The private sector is doing fine," a line now featured in countless GOP attack ads.

The month ended better for Obama. The Supreme Court struck down much of Arizona's strict anti-immigration law, a law the president opposed. "But we're looking ahead, and we know this race is going to be really close," she said.

Obama on Thursday starts a two-day bus tour of Ohio and western Pennsylvania, a trip that partly mimics Romney's earlier and longer recent tour. The president might spend part of his drive time dialing for dollars. It's a chore all candidates face, but it poses new urgency for the president, because pro-Romney "super PACs" are raising far more campaign money than are Democratic groups.

In a leaked recording of a conference call Obama recently placed from Air Force One to top donors from 2008, the president implored them to match their earlier generosity. "We're going to have to deal with these super PACs in a serious way," Obama said, according to the Daily Beast.

Obama's team may find some comfort in knowing that since April 10, pro-Romney forces have spent more money on TV ads in North Carolina ? $6.4 million ? than in any other state except Florida and Ohio. Four years ago, Obama narrowly won North Carolina, which had voted Republican in seven straight presidential races. Most plausible scenarios for a Romney presidency require him to secure the state, the sooner the better.

The two campaigns, including their allied super PACs, are matching each other nearly dollar for dollar on TV ads in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Virginia and New Hampshire. Romney's forces are out-spending Obama's in Iowa and Michigan. The opposite is true in Colorado.

Romney is vacationing this week in New Hampshire, where family games might mix with talk of who his running mate should be. Romney, whose oversight of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games won wide praise, plans to attend the Summer Games later this summer in London.

He also will go to Israel, a trip that could appeal to Jewish voters and donors, and to conservatives who see Israel as a vital military and political ally.

Meanwhile, Republicans worry that Democrats are making headway with claims that Romney supported shipping jobs overseas when he headed a corporate restructuring firm called Bain Capital. His campaign says Romney did not oversee the export of U.S. jobs, although Bain at times invested in companies that helped pioneer outsourcing certain jobs to places such as India.

"It is a problem," Galen said of anti-Romney ads citing Bain and outsourcing. But he said the ads might have had greater impact if Obama could have saved them for September. Instead, Galen said, Democrats had to throw every weapon possible to counter the damage from Obama's "private sector is doing fine" remark.

It's not clear how June's biggest political headline ? the Supreme Court's decision to uphold "Obamacare" ? will play out in the campaign.

Congressional Republicans have jumped on the court's conclusion that a fee to be imposed on people who refuse to obtain health insurance is actually a tax. Romney tiptoes around the issue because the fee/tax is similar to one he imposed on Massachusetts residents who failed to buy medical insurance.

"Once the dust settles, the health care issue still serves as a way for both sides to motivate their respective bases, but it's hard to see it playing much of a role with the rest of the electorate," said Dan Schnur, a former Republican adviser who teaches political science at the University of Southern California. A more important issue, Schnur said, "is Bain vs. Solyndra."

Solyndra was a California-based solar panel manufacturer that received a large federal loan and big compliments from Obama before filing for bankruptcy.

"There's no question the Bain argument is working very effectively for Obama," Schnur said, "because it hits directly at voters' biggest concerns about a private sector-driven approach to the economy. But Solyndra accomplishes exactly the same thing for Romney, when he argues about too large a role for government."

The economy, Schnur said, will remain the top issue until polling places close on Nov. 6.

Summer vacations and Olympic Games might distract voters for the next several weeks, and political and legal activists might keep arguing over health care and immigration. But Romney is staking his candidacy on the claim that Obama has failed on the economy.

An election that seems destined to be tight will largely turn on voters' gut feelings about job security, the government's role in boosting or hindering employment, and candidates' visions for the nation's role in a global economy.

With Android becoming a more powerful and popular mobile gaming platform, there?s one obvious question: where are all the controllers? Sure you could use a PC a PC game controller on an Android tablet, but they don?t always work well because they weren?t necessarily built for Android.

Enter PowerA and its upcoming line of Moga-branded controllers, which the company claims will be the first controllers built from the ground up for Google?s mobile operating system. There are other devices out there like Gamestop?s Android controller, but PowerA has a developer kit that?s made to work well with Android and the company was at Google I/O this week seeking out developers who are willing to add Moga support to their apps.

More important from a user perspective, the company has two controllers coming out that will allow you to securely mount your smartphone or tablet right on top of them. The regular Moga has two analog sticks, several buttons and dual triggers in front. Its mount supports smartphones up to five inches in size as a PowerA rep explained that the company was able to securely attach a Samsung Galaxy note.?

The slightly larger Moga Pro can mount devices up to 7-inches in size as the company demonstrated by attaching a Nexus 7 tablet. It has a much more PlayStation-like appearance with more buttons and larger analog sticks. Both Mogas will be available in the fall, with the regular Moga launching a few weeks before the Pro. PowerA has not released pricing, but says the products will be affordable.

We had a chance to watch both the regular Moga and the Moga Pro in action at PowerA?s Google I/O booth and we were impressed with how securely they mounted both a Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone and a Nexus 7 tablet. We also can imagine the Mogas working really well with Android devices that connect to your TV like the Android 4.0 Mini PC.
