New Orleans police evacuated their headquarters and neighboring streets Thursday evening after two live hand grenades were found in a car that belonged to a man who allegedly killed three people earlier in the day.
The owner of the car was shot dead by an officer when the explosives were found and deactivated by a bomb squad, WDSU.com reported.
It took around 90 minutes to evacuate the five-story building after lab technicians found the grenades in a safe in the back of the care, according to WDSU.
Details of the event as well as a recent spate of violence will likely be addressed in a news conference Friday attended by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landreiu, Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas and Crime Commissioner James Carter, according to WDSU.com.
