Big Brother? Homes, cities to watch, interact with you

Our homes and cities may soon be filled with sensors and tiny, energy-sipping computers that watch our every move in order, we hope, to enrich our lives and lower our impact on the environment, according to researchers working in the field of ?ambient intelligence.?

While there?s a creepy Big Brother element to our houses and cities watching, learning, and interacting with our every move, the smart homes and cities of the future are really just the next frontier in our already sensor-rich and hyper-connected world.

Such technology will eliminate the programming steps needed, for example, to make our thermostats adjust depending on time of day or lighting systems that turn off lamps when nobody is in the room. The intelligent devices will just do it seamlessly by learning our patterns and preferences.

The heart of the technology is the ability to computers ?reason through? all of the data collected by our gadgets so that we can ?use them in an intelligent way,? Diane Cook, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Washington State University, told me today.

Smart thermostats and home lighting systems are obvious applications that already exist in half-baked forms such as the Nest learning thermostat and various emerging smart grid technologies. Future iterations of ambient intelligence could also have a big impact on elder care, Cook notes.?

?For segments of the population, this technology would allow them to stay at home for a couple of years longer than they could otherwise by providing continuous updated information to loved ones and caregivers about the wellbeing of their loved ones,? she said.

For example, the smart home can turn off a stove that a parent with early-stage dementia forgot about ? and send a text message to a child or caregiver that the mental lapse occurred. It could also sound alerts to remind aging parents to take medications or call 911 if they fall down in the shower.

?If there hasn?t been the normal amount of motion in the house today, that would be another good reason to contact a family member,? Cook noted.

This use of the technology could save states about $9.4 million a day in health care costs, she notes in the video below where she describes some of her research. Cook goes into more detail on the work in an article published in Friday?s issue of the journal Science.

One challenge, she told me, is to get older people to embrace ambient intelligent technology. In ongoing trials at an apartment complex is Seattle, for example, adults with cognitive health issues tend to resist any type of change in their environment.

?It is the caregivers, the children, and the spouses who say, ?Please, bring it on, we need some help,?? she said. ?And so the individuals who need it most might be reluctant but for those for whom we are providing the service because it is them who do it otherwise, they are highly embracing it.?

That?s partly because generations X, Y and digital natives are already accustomed to security cameras watching our every move and technology that keeps in constant contact with our friends and colleagues. We expect and want our technology to get even smarter.

Older folks, Cook noted, are more concerned about their privacy and the security of their data. One technique that seems to help them embrace ambient intelligence, she said, is to show them how the technology works.

?Humans don?t see it, we don?t analyze it, and that allows them to be more comfortable with it,? she said.

It is not just our homes that are getting smarter. Our cities, too, are beginning to embrace the technology, write Michael O?Grady?and Gregory O?Hare? at University College Dublin, in a related article in Science.

For example, not too far in the future, on a visit to a museum our smartphone may be able to detect what exhibits we visit and suggest other things to check out based on our preferences similar to the way Amazon.com learns our reading habits to suggest books we might enjoy.

Another technology called the Dust-Bot, the Irish researchers note, could soon have robots sweeping the streets without any human interaction. But such a technology, they note, is currently cost-prohibitive. It is still cheaper to pay a flesh-and-bone human minimum wage to do the thankless chore.

Ultimately, getting to the smart, connected city will require standardization of technology so that devices can all talk to each other and energy harvesting techniques that will let these gadgets run all the time without constantly needing new batteries or sucking more and more energy from the grid.

But such a future, the ambient intelligence researchers argue, is not to be feared akin to an Orwellian Big Brother. ?Ultimately, ambient intelligence is about people and improving their quality of life,? the Irish researchers write.

Samsung Series 5 Ultra (NP530U4B-A01US)

You may get your software, music, and movies from the cloud, but there are still plenty of folks who like to install programs from disc; rip CDs from, well, CDs; and watch DVDs on the plane. Samsung has a deal for these people: Take your average ultrabook. Add one pound to its weight, bringing it to a still eminently portable 3.9 pounds. Subtract $100 from its price, bringing it to $899.99 list. Outfit it with a 14- instead of 13.3-inch screen, a roomy hybrid hard drive instead of a solid-state drive, and the onboard optical drive that nearly every other ultrabook lacks. Presto: You have the Series 5 Ultra (NP530U4B-A01US), an affordable alternative to Samsung's super-thin, super-elite Series 9?or, for that matter, the 14-inch, no-optical-drive HP Envy 14 Spectre ($1,399.99 direct, 4 stars).

With its DVD?RW drive and full array of ports, the NP530U4B-A01US splits the difference between ultrabooks like the Dell XPS 13 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars) and ultraportables like the Editors' Choice Toshiba Portege R835-P50X ($888.99 list, 4.5 stars). It also requires a model-number microscope to distinguish from the NP530U3B-A01US, which is a 13.3-inch ultrabook with no optical drive.

Design
At 0.8 by 13.1 by 9.0 inches (HWD), the Series 5 Ultra is fractionally bigger than 13.3-inch ultrabooks and fractionally smaller than 14-inch laptops like the Lenovo IdeaPad U400 ($899.99 direct, 4 stars). It sports a handsome silver-gray aluminum lid and palm rest with a flat black chiclet-style keyboard.

The keyboard is not backlit, but has a comfortable if somewhat shallow typing feel with an exemplary layout including dedicated, full-sized Home, End, PgUp, and PgDn keys. The large touchpad also has dedicated left and right mouse buttons instead of just clickable corners, making it a pleasure to use.

The Series 5 Ultra's 14-inch display has the same 1,366 by 768 resolution you'll find throughout the ultrabook segment. It's nicely bright (300 nits), with a non-reflective matte finish and average viewing angles, and showed minimal flex without feeling flimsy in our grasp-by-the-corners test. Two dinky speakers above the keyboard provide sufficiently loud and clear audio, if not booming bass.

Features
Oddly, our test unit's 802.11n Wi-Fi wouldn't work out of the box, reporting no wireless networks within range even when we pressed Fn-F12 for Samsung's convenient wireless control panel to make sure it was switched on. We used the system restore function to return the Series 5 Ultra to factory defaults, after which Wi-Fi worked fine. Other wireless functions include Bluetooth and Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) for streaming screen and sound to an HDTV set equipped with a $100-or-so Belkin or Netgear adapter.

Next to the tray-loading DVD?RW drive on the Samsung's right side are a USB 2.0 port and SD/MMC memory-card slot. At the left are Ethernet, VGA, and HDMI ports; a headphone/microphone jack; and two USB 3.0 ports.

The Series 5 Ultra's storage system combines a 500GB hard drive (420GB free) with a 16GB solid-state drive dubbed Express Cache. The latter doesn't appear as a drive letter or partition, but is used to speed up booting and resume from sleep, which we stopwatched at roughly 34 and 3 seconds respectively.

Samsung supports the Series 5 Ultra with a one-year warranty. In addition to Windows 7 Home Premium, its software preload includes a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security, the kudzu-like WildTangent games, and a handful of Samsung-brand utilities ranging from Easy Settings (a friendly alternative to digging through Windows Control Panel) to a Mac OS Dock-like (or Windows Taskbar-like) program launcher.

Performance

The Series 5 Ultra has the same 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-2467M processor and 4GB of RAM as a number of other ultrabooks including the Dell XPS 13, HP Envy 14 Spectre, and Editors' Choice HP Folio 13, and its performance for the most part is in the same ballpark?2 minutes 38 seconds for our Handbrake video encoding test, for example, versus 2:31 for the Spectre and 2:40 for the XPS 13.

Its PCMark 7 score of 2,822 trailed the 3,000-plus scores of the other ultrabooks, because those systems have SSDs and PCMark 7 favors solid-state over hard drive, even hybrid hard drive, platforms. Like other laptops relying on Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics, the Samsung fell short in our gaming tests, failing to reach 15 frames per second in both Crysis (14.8 frames per second) and Lost Planet 2 (13.3 fps).

The Series 5 Ultra's battery is sealed within the case, so we couldn't confirm its watt-hour rating (Google says 45Wh). It lasted an okay but unexciting 5 hours 47 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 rundown test?competitive with laptops like the Lenovo U400, but an hour or two shy of the best ultrabooks' battery life (and well shy of the 9:26 posted by the Toshiba R835-P50X).

Just as it has a hybrid storage system, the Samsung Series 5 Ultra is something of a hybrid ultrabook: Its 14-inch screen and built-in optical drive will appeal to users who find 13.3-inch, DVD-less ultrabooks too limiting?although we can't help thinking that a lot of those people would be served by an ultrabook plus a $50 USB DVD drive for occasional use. Meanwhile, its weight saving over machines like the Lenovo IdeaPad U400 or Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z, some of which offer better performance, is only about half a pound at most. The bottom line is that the Series 5 Ultra is an appealing system, but a niche one.

Justin Bieber Makes Justified Leap To Manhood

In 2002, Justin Timberlake blew everyone's minds when he dropped Justified, his star-making solo album. It propelled him from tween-dream poster boy to legitimate pop star.

Exactly 10 years later, there's another young singer who is looking to make the same leap. When Justin Bieber dropped "Boyfriend" earlier this week, he laid down the gauntlet and declared his pop-star manhood.

His transition is one that Timberlake faced a decade ago as he looked to carve a new path for himself in a post-'NSYNC world. With grinding, ear-busting production from the Neptunes and Timbaland, the onetime boy-bander created an album that sounded unlike anything his fans had heard before. Sure, he had teased it on 'NSYNC's last album, Celebrity, but this album was different — it was all Timberlake. It was sexy and definitely much edgier lyrically, with him singing about girls and sex in a more-mature way.

At the time, he faced the incredibly difficult pop conundrum of having to grow up right before an audience. That's the challenge Bieber now faces. At 18, he can't stray too far from his My World days, but in order to grow as an artist and a person, he also can't make "Baby" over and over again.

And, honestly, who would want him to? Edgy and sexy feel like the innate next step for the teen star, with Usher as his mentor — a dude who made a name for himself singing songs about the things he does in the bedroom and flaunting his abs all over town. Although, it's interesting to note that Bieber chose to follow in Timberlake's footsteps. A little history lesson: Timberlake once was in a bidding war to sign Bieber on as his protégé. Usher won, and the rest is history.

"Boyfriend," Bieber's lead single off his Believe album, set for release later this year, is straight from the Timberlake blueprint. With production from Mike Posner and Mason Levy, the song is the perfect blend of hip-hop, vintage Michael Jackson-flavored R&B and pop. It's not a far cry from JT's "Like I Love You" thematically: A young man meets a young woman and uses a song, full of bleeps and beats, to declare all the reasons they should be together. Consider all the young women across the world sold on every one of his swag-heavy arguments.

It's easy to harp on Bieber for playing it very close to the Timberlake playbook. But, why shouldn't he? Timberlake seems more focused on movies than music; Bieber's filling the blue-eyed soul void left by Timberlake's absence on the charts. And with A-list assistance from Timbaland (yes, Timberlake's producer), Diplo and will.i.am, Believe just might make us all believe in the power of Bieber.

With the single poised for a huge debut and radio embracing the teen in a bigger way than ever before, now might be the perfect time for Bieber to become everyone's musical boyfriend. So, grab your fondue pot, get your swaggie on, and blast the track. You know you want to.

Haney: Woods' chances at Masters depends on putter

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tiger Woods' former swing coach thinks the 14-time major winner's chances at the Masters next week depend on his putter.

Once a coach, always a coach for Hank Haney ? even after writing a detailed book about his most famous student.

"I don't think you can predict how someone is going to putt," Haney said Wednesday while signing copies of his book, "The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods," at a midtown Manhattan golf store a day after its release. "Tiger hasn't putted well enough at Augusta in some time, since 2005. If he putts well ? it really gets down to eliminating three putts. If he does that I would be very surprised if he doesn't have a chance to win. I'd be shocked if he doesn't have a chance to win."

Haney pointed to a recent change in Woods' putting stroke, a switch back to an older style, as reason for his improved performance on the greens that helped him to victory at Bay Hill last week.

And Haney is in position to know. He worked with Woods from 2004-10, when the then-No. 1 player in the world won six majors but resigned not long after Woods returned to the PGA Tour from a sex scandal that ended his marriage and sent his life into turmoil.

"The Big Miss" generated a lot of buzz in the months leading up to its release because of excerpts that focused in part on Woods' obsession with the Navy SEALS and his relationship with wife Elin Nordegren, but it's a more complicated look at a self-centered superstar athlete.

"Read the book in context I think it's an overly positive book about Tiger," Haney said. "I couldn't have only positive things in the book because then it wouldn't be an honest book."

Haney said Woods told him that they "should remain good friends" when they parted not long after the 2010 Masters, but they have not spoken since then. Haney hasn't reached out to Woods, either: "Why would I?" he said.

Still, Haney watches Woods carefully enough to be able to rattle off his rankings in different statistical categories.

"I like to watch, see how he's doing, analyze what he's doing. Hopefully watch him win. It's great for golf," Haney said "Eventually, I think it'll be very good for me if he ever has an opportunity to break Jack Nicklaus' record because any way you slice it I will have at least a little part in that record because I helped him for six of those majors," Haney added. "Obviously, it's a little part, but you still feel connected in some way."

Haney is confident that the timing of the books release will have no affect on Woods as he heads to the Masters, which is April 5-8.

"He just won. Tiger doesn't get distracted easily," Haney said. "He's gone through a lot. But time heals a lot of things. It looks to me like he's getting a lot more comfortable on the course. ... that time has passed."

China, South Korea and US warn about nuclear terrorism

Though North Korea wasn't mentioned by name, the impoverished nation's recent rocket tests cast a shadow over the nuclear proliferation summit in Seoul.

The leaders of South Korea, the United States and China issued stark warnings Tuesday about the threat of nuclear terrorism during the final day of a nuclear summit that has so far been upstaged by North Korea's long-range rocket launch plans.

Nearly 60 leaders have gathered for the two-day conference meant to find ways to keep terrorists from detonating an atomic weapon in a major city. The leaders were to release a communique Tuesday about their efforts to lock down the world's supply of nuclear material by 2014.

Much of the drama, however, has centered on North Korea's stated plans to launch a satellite on a long-range rocket around the April 15 celebration of the birthday of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung. Washington and Seoul view the launch as cover for nuclear missile development; North Korea says the satellite is part of a peaceful space program and will help in forecasting the weather.

President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Monday pressured China, Pyongyang's main ally and economic supporter, to use its leverage to persuade the North to back away from the launch.

Although North Korea wasn't mentioned in opening summit comments Tuesday by China, the U.S. and South Korea, the launch was still a major point of discussion in leaders' meetings on the sidelines. Lee and Italian Premier Mario Monti met Tuesday and urged North Korea to cancel its launch plans, Lee's office said.

Lee told Monti that North Korea would immediately receive aid from the South if it opens up like Vietnam and China have done, his office said.

In his opening comments, Chinese President Hu Jintao called for leaders to "commit to eliminating nuclear proliferation and the roots of nuclear terrorism."

Obama urged leaders to secure nuclear material to prevent terrorists from killing hundreds of thousands of people.

Lee said nuclear proliferation and terrorism "are becoming grave threats" to international peace. "There is no border in terrorism," he said.

North Korea's surprise announcement 11 days ago of a rocket launch came shortly after Pyongyang and Washington settled an aid-for-nuclear-freeze deal that had been seen as a breakthrough. Washington warns that the launch would jeopardize that deal.

The impoverished North has a history of angling for food, oil and other concessions in exchange for disarmament pledges and has previously created crises during diplomatic talks in what negotiators see as attempts to secure more aid.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told leaders during the summit that the world is urging North Korea to cancel the launch, according to Japanese officials.

"North Korea's launch of a missile under the guise of a satellite, as recently announced, is against the nonproliferation efforts of the international community," Foreign Ministry press secretary Yutaka Yokoi said, quoting a copy of Noda's prepared remarks.

Following last year's earthquake and tsunami disaster, where three reactors melted down, Japan hopes to stress the threat that natural disasters pose to nuclear security, in addition to manmade events such as terrorism.

In Tokyo, Japan's defense minister on Tuesday ordered interceptor missile units to prepare for the launch. Seoul also said Monday it might shoot down any parts of the North Korean rocket that pass over South Korean territory.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian soldiers clashed with thousands of angry soccer fans in a Mediterranean coastal city over the suspension of their club following a deadly riot last month, witnesses said Saturday. A medical official said a teenager was killed and 68 people injured.

The Feb. 1 melee following a match in the city of Port Said in which at least 73 people died was the world's worst soccer-related disaster in 15 years. The causes remain murky. Officers have been charged with assisting Port Said fans attack supporters of a Cairo club who had a long history of enmity with the police, and some port residents have claimed that hired outsiders were responsible for much of the violence.

In the latest clashes, Egyptian troops fired volleys of tear gas and shot into in the air to disperse protesters affiliated with Port Said's Al-Masry club, angry over what they see as unfair measures against their club and their city. Violence erupted late Friday and continued through Saturday.

Witnesses said that protesters set fire to tires, blocked major roads before gathering in front of the Suez Canal's main administrative building in an attempt to storm it. Soldiers and police cordoned off the building.

Activists in the city say that families of fans who were arrested after the deadly stadium riot used to hold peaceful protests, but "instigators" have turned their peaceful protests into violent ones.

A medical official said teenager Belal Mamdouh was killed by a gunshot to the back. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press, said 68 people were injured with gunshots and breathing difficulties from tear gas.

The clashes originally erupted after the Egyptian Football Association on Friday officially suspended Al-Masry for two seasons ending 2013, and closed its stadium for three years as punishment for the stadium riot.

"People are upset that the club is being punished and feel that the problem is not with them, but with the security forces who failed to do their job," said Sameh Abdel-Khaleh, a Port Said resident observing the protests.

Protesters blocked workers Saturday from entering an industrial part of the city known as the investor's area, which is comprised of mostly factories, said Abdel-Khaleh, a manager at one of the factories.

Protesters, however, denounced what they described as a media campaign against their club. Hours before the protests broke out, one well-known sports presenter, a former soccer goalkeeper, said that the measures were not enough.

Street fighting renewed Saturday evening as protesters hurled rocks at military forces, who responded with salvos of tear gas. Ambulances rushed to the area to treat the injured.

The Feb. 1 riot began minutes after a league match between Cairo club Al-Ahly, the most popular in Egypt, and Al-Masry. The home side won 3-1, but fans were upset for what they said were obscene signs raised by Al-Ahly fans.

Survivors of the stadium riot say men wielding batons, knifes, and fireworks streamed from Al-Masry stands and stormed the field to attack Al-Ahly supporters, stabbing them and tossing them off bleachers while the police looked on.

Egypt's general prosecutor charged 75 people, including nine senior police officers, with assisting the attackers. The officers, along with several Al-Masry officials, allegedly knew in advance that the home fans planned to attack Al-Ahly supporters, yet they were allowed to enter the grounds without being searched for weapons as is customary in soccer matches.

The policemen also allegedly allowed 3,000 more people into the stadium than the maximum number authorized to attend the game.

The prosecution said that many of them were criminals known to the local police. It said the killing of the protesters was planned in advance and that the culprits prepared for the massacre with knifes, rocks and explosives. Fans from the two teams have a history of animosity.

Some witnesses have given accounts about "thugs" brought in from outside, but among those charged, more than 60 of them are Al-Masry fans.

The melee sparked days of street protests. Most of the dead were members of the Ultras Ahlawy, a group of avid politicized soccer fans who have long enmity with the police. Ultras have played a key role in the uprising against Hosni Mubarak. Ahly fans regularly taunt the police, who disappeared from the streets during the 18-day upheaval.

Activists have accused the police of turning a blind eye during the riots or even helping organize the attack, in retaliation for the al-Ahly fans' role during the uprising.

A month after the riots, Port Said remains stigmatized. Residents say they are collectively blamed for the violence and have described their situation as a "siege," with merchants and other visitors staying away from the city.

6waves Lolapps Sheds Most Of Its Development Team To Focus on Publishing Games

6waves Lolapps, the social gaming company that was formed out of a merger just half a year ago, shed most of its employees on the development side today to focus on publishing other studios' titles. The decision today seems to undo some of what that merger agreement created last July and we hear it had to do with a limited runway of cash. Last summer, social gaming company Lolapps merged with game publisher 6waves to form a new entity that was a dual producer and publisher. They then raised funding from Korean gaming giant Nexon and Insight Venture Partners. The amount they raised was undisclosed, but an SEC filing showed a $35 million round. The company insists, however, that the merger is still in place and Lolapps is not being spun out. They didn't disclose how many people were laid off. "6waves Lolapps will now focus on working with independent developers to launch and grow their mobile and social games," said chief executive Rex Ng in a statement. "As a result, we have restructured the company to focus on key functions which include developer outreach, product advisory, user growth initiatives and our publishing platform."
