A crisp, yet slightly windy, but precipitation-free day awaited the participants this year in the 14th running of the?our Fall Classic Road Rally.? The rain clouds gave way to a sunny and breezy afternoon for the SPORTS Road Rally teams on Saturday, October 20.
This year?s Rally theme, ?SPORTS,? put the focus on various sporting events taking place in the county, melded with thoughts of Olympic lore.? In the great spirit of friendly competition, all the Rally teams were winners right off the bat as they donated over 300 lbs. of ?bounty? for this year?s Bag the Bounty program.
Highlights from the Rally included a stop at the Straban Township Recreation Park to watch and cheer on the Elkton Eclipse and Mechanicsburg Nine baseball teams as they engaged in 1864-style baseball.?? Teams met players with nicknames like ?Hammer,? ?Breezy,? and ?Meatloaf.???At their second stop, the teams joined the Special Olympics athletes of Adams County in a game of bocce ball at Scozzaro?s Restaurant.? The last stop of the day featured bowling for the teams at the newly opened Countryside Family Bowl in York Springs.? After that, the teams were introduced to some of the best views in Adams County while they traveled?Snyder and Orchard View Roads in Huntington Township.? The fall colors were sparkling on leaves as the teams traversed the 55 mile course.
For only the second time in its history, the rally ended at the same place it started, the Adams County Agricultural and Natural Resources, where the Finish Line Party ensued.? Catered by Quisine 360, the teams enjoyed a Greek inspired menu including keftedes, felafel with yzatziki, spanikopita, babba ganoush, and roasted and baked chicken with pilaf rice.
The teams were also entertained by the Gettysburg Fencing Club.? Fencing is one of only five sports that have been featured in every modern Olympic Games.?
?The awards ceremony began with a welcome from Master of Ceremonies Mark Purdy.? The day?s Honorary Rally Master was Malachy, the Pekingese who won Best in Show at the 136th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.? Along with his owner, David Fitzpatrick, they helped hand out awards.
Teams gathered with anticipation for the awards as Mark Purdy began to name the winners. ?Chief among the prizes awarded at the Finish Line Party was the ACNB Bank Conservancy Cup, adorned with the highly coveted ?fuzzy dice.? This award went to Jim and Marietta Witt, driving for first-time sponsors Boyer Nurseries and Orchards.? Jim and Marietta have won the Conservancy Cup three times.? ?Included with the cup were an overnight package to the Wyndham Hotel, a Cashtown Inn gift certificate, and a Chapel-Ridge Farms gift certificate.? Winning the Gettysburg Foundation?s ?Coolest Car? crystal bowl and two four-day passes?to next year?s 150th Gettysburg Anniversary Reenactment ?were first-time participants Joe and Cathie MacInnes, driving in a 1966 black Austin Healey Sprite for Sites Realty.?
This year the Road Rally included a special remembrance to long-time supporter John White, who passed away earlier this year.? The John R. White People?s Choice ?Character? Award, as voted on by the teams, went to Team Gorman/Gomer.? Steve, Amy, Phillip, and Elizabeth brought the true spirit of the Olympics to the Rally when they?dressed as a team of USA curlers.? The Team received Chamber of Commerce Wine Festival tickets and two rounds of golf from the Links at Gettysburg.
The President?s Cup, endowed through a gift from Dick and Donna Mountfort, is awarded to the team who has the best score and also has participated in the most LCAC road rallies. This year?s President?s Cup and Appalachian Brewing Company package was also won by Team Gorman/Gomer, driving for Mason Dixon Home Inspection.
Winners of the ?Roads Scholar? award were truly happy, as Larry and Heather Roberts? name was drawn from a list of other teams. ?Driving for Campbell & White, they received a $250 gift certificate from Scott & Company Fine Jewelers.? Other prizes given were ?Best Sponsor Award? (gift certificate from Five Points Farm Market and Greenhouse), awarded to Robert and Linda Lentz and Joe Krushka and Judy McMullen, who drove for Kuhn Orchards; ?Traveled the Farthest? to Curtis and Linda Zufelt of Florida; and the ?Non-Profit Award? (gift certificate from Five Points Farm Market and Greenhouse) was awarded to the Adams County Democratic Party Team of Marcia Wilson and Richard Aomi.? Team members Fred and Linda Schwenker received a gift certificate from Countryside Family Bowl for ?Dead Last but Finished.?
Rally MasterMarkClowney thanked his committee for a job well done, and to all the sponsors, volunteers, and drivers who make the Rally successful year after year. The Road Rally is one of two major fundraisers held each year by the Land Conservancy.
