Overcome Public Speaking Reluctance By Thinking of Your Audience Rather Than Yourself [Public Speaking]

Overcome Public Speaking Reluctance By Thinking of Your Audience Rather Than YourselfLots of people both extroverts and introverts dislike public speaking because the entire audience is focused on you and seemingly critical of any flaw or mistake you make when most of the time the audience just wants you to finish so they can get on with their life.

Personal tips weblog Dumb Little Man offers insight into this issue:

Someone I respect a great deal once told me that ?shyness is pride.' What he meant was that shy people spend too much time worrying about themselves and how they look in the eyes of other people, when they should be focusing on what's outside, trying to do a good job, trying to add value to the situation. This is brilliant advice ? start thinking about others and less about yourself. In fact, everyone else is actually thinking about themselves, too. Nobody really cares about you. So stop being so self absorbed.

I know the times I've been stuck hearing presenters at awards shows and conferences I politely listen, but don't really care if they're a perfect speaker or just a good one. Stop worrying so much about what your audience is thinking and finish the presentation already. Photo by Cornell University

Android integration for car stereos and rear-view mirrors, hands-on (video)

CES may be over, but we've still got a few interesting gems to share from our week-long trip in Las Vegas. Far off the beaten path of glitzy booths and familiar brand names, we discovered a few companies that are looking to bring Android gadgetry into automobiles. One that exemplifies this nascent product realm is known as Rydeen. While many of its creations remain merely prototypes, the firm is close to completion of a double-DIN stereo head unit that runs Android 2.2. Then, imagine our surprise when we discovered a functional version of Froyo running from within a rear-view mirror. By the company's own admission, it has no interest to bring a stock Android experience to the reflective surface, but rather is treating this project as a learning experience. By 2013, it hopes to show a finalized mirror with a simplified interface more appropriate for drivers. We happened to grab a brief hands-on video with both models, along with the Android head unit. While we'd be hesitant to use any of the samples in their current state, each provides a fine glimpse into some of the consumer products that we may see in the desert next year.

Ted Williams: Where Is He Now?

Remember Ted Williams? The Man with the Golden Voice? The guy who sky-rocketed to fame because he has a deep voice and because America is obsessed with rewarding those who don't actually accomplish anything?

And who then ended up in rehab a few weeks later?

Entertainment Tonight tracked Williams down this week and aired a feature that updated viewers on the former homeless man's status. Apparently he's now clean and living in a condo with his girlfriend! Good for him! Watch for more:

Fish Aquariums: Perfect Pets at College

Letting the fish acclimate

Letting the fish acclimate

When kids head off to college, it?s common for them to really miss their pets. I know my two kids do. Within the first few minutes of a Skype call, they both ask to see the dogs. They miss soft, snuggly Kobe, and cute, feisty Izzy!

To help fill the void for my pet-enthusiast daughter (Jamie), she recently set up a fish aquarium in her student apartment. Fish are extremely low maintenance, so it?s about the only pet that accommodates her busy college schedule (and one of the few pets typically allowed in student housing). Even though fish are not soft and furry nor do they chase a ball, she truly does enjoy her fish.

Fish

The tranquil effect of watching fish combined with her busy student schedule is perfect. Watching her fish glide serenely through the water acts as a great de-stressor. ?As you sit and enjoy your aquarium, you will be amazed how the stress of the day?s activities vacates your mind and body.? (Source: The Benefits of Bringing an Aquarium Into Your Life)

She also likes having a pet to care for. Daily feedings is her time to take a little break and enjoy their beautiful colors, and bi-weekly water changes are made easy with a gravel vac. Two other reasons that a fish aquarium is good for students are that the aquarium does not take up much space and fish have very few expenses.

Jamie purchased a used 10-gallon aquarium that came only with lighting. On a weekend home, we had the aquarium experts at the local Drs. Foster & Smith Retail Store help us get all the other necessities such as filtration, a pump, fish food, and some fun aquarium decorations. If you?re thinking about getting an aquarium setup for a student, consider an aquarium kit that comes with everything you need.

Aquarium Setup:
It does take a little knowledge to set up properly a fish aquarium. Jamie watched this video that showed her step-by-step how to set up an aquarium, which made setup a breeze. After waiting a few days for the water to filter, she added a few fish.
She recently added 2 very cool glow fish to her aquarium.

.
For now during her college years, fish are the perfect pet for Jamie, and maybe they are just the beginning of lifelong hobby. Plus, listening to her talk about her fish has given me an inkling to set up an aquarium. The more I learn about fish and aquariums, the more I realize that aquarium keeping is an amazing hobby.

(Here is a very reasonable aquarium kit that even comes with 6 glow fish!)

Cold winters caused by warmer summers, research suggests

Friday, January 13, 2012

Scientists have offered up a convincing explanation for the harsh winters recently experienced in the Northern Hemisphere; increasing temperatures and melting ice in the Arctic regions creating more snowfall in the autumn months at lower latitudes.

Their findings may throw light on specific weather incidents such as the extremely harsh Florida winter of 2010 which ended up killing a host of tropical creatures, as well as the chaos-causing snow that fell on the UK in December 2010.

Published today, Friday 13 January, in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters, this new research suggests that the trend of increasingly cold winters over the past two decades could be explained by warmer temperatures in the autumn having a marked effect on normal weather patterns, causing temperatures to plummet in the following winter.

The strongest winter cooling trends were observed in the eastern United States, southern Canada and much of northern Eurasia, which the researchers, based at Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER), the University of Massachusetts and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, believe cannot be entirely explained by the natural variability of the climate system.

Their results showed strong warming throughout July, August and September in the Arctic, which continued through the autumn and, according to their observational data, appeared to enhance the melting of sea ice.

This warmer atmosphere, combined with melting sea ice, allows the Arctic atmosphere to hold more moisture and increases the likelihood of precipitation over more southern areas such as Eurasia, which, in the freezing temperatures, would fall as snow. Indeed, the researchers' observations showed that the average snow coverage in Eurasia has increased over the past two decades.

They believe the increased snow cover has an intricate effect on the Arctic Oscillation ? an atmospheric pressure pattern in the mid- to high-latitudes ? causing it to remain in the "negative phase".

In the "negative phase", high pressure resides over the Arctic region, pushing colder air into mid-latitude regions, such as the United States and northern Canada, and giving the observed colder winters.

The lead author of the study, Judah Cohen, said: "In my mind there is no doubt that the globe is getting warmer and this will favour warmer temperatures in all seasons and in all locations; however, I do think that the increasing trend in snow cover has led to regional cooling as discussed in the paper and I see no reason why this won't continue into the near future. Also if it continues to get much warmer in the fall, precipitation that currently falls as snow will fall as rain instead, eliminating the winter cooling."

It is also deduced that one of the main reasons conventional climate models fail to pick up on this observed winter cooling is their failure to account for the variability of snow cover, which, as demonstrated in this study, can greatly improve the accuracy of seasonal, and lengthier, forecasts.

"We show in the paper how using the snow cover in a seasonal forecast can provide a more skilful or accurate forecast. Without correctly simulating the coupling of winter climate patterns and the variability of snow fall, the models currently used by Government centres miss an important influence on winter and will therefore continue to be deficient in predicting winter weather on seasonal time scales, and even longer decadal time scales," continued Cohen.

New Orleans police HQ evacuated over grenades

By msnbc.com

?

New Orleans police evacuated their headquarters and neighboring streets Thursday evening after two live hand grenades were found in a car that belonged to a man who allegedly killed three people earlier in the day.

The owner of the car was shot dead by an officer when the explosives were found and deactivated by a bomb squad, WDSU.com reported.

It took around 90 minutes to evacuate the five-story building after lab technicians found the grenades in a safe in the back of the care, according to WDSU.

Details of the event as well as a recent spate of violence will likely be addressed in a news conference Friday attended by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landreiu, Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas and Crime Commissioner James Carter, according to WDSU.com.

FTC expands Google antitrust probe: source (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. regulators looking at whether Google manipulates its search results to favor its own products have expanded the probe to include Google+, the search giant's new social networking tool, a source familiar with the probe said on Friday.

Google+, which was launched in June, offers many of the capabilities available on Twitter and on Facebook.

Google announced on Tuesday new features aimed at making search results more personalized. As part of the changes, photos and posts from Google+ will increasingly appear within the search results.

A Google spokesman, however, said that the Federal Trade Commission had not asked about Google+ or indicated it was looking into the new social network as of this week.

Google has been broadly accused of using its clout in the search market to shut out rivals, like travel search, by putting them low in search results. The source said that the FTC was roughly in the middle of what could be an extended probe.

The Federal Trade Commission declined comment. Bloomberg earlier on Friday reported the expansion of the Google probe, citing two people familiar with the situation.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center had asked the FTC this week to look at Google's decision to include information from Google+ in Google's search results.

Twitter had also protested the change. Twitter's general counsel, Alex Macgillivray, a former Google executive, said in a Tweet on Tuesday that Google's changes "warped" Web searches and represented a "bad day for the Internet."

Google said Friday that it believed including Google+ in search results was good for users. "We believe that our improvements to search will benefit consumers by better surfacing social content, and the great thing about the openness of the Internet is that if users don't like our service they can easily switch to another site," the company said in a statement.
